知的な歌詞と高速メロディック・ハードコアを融合させた、パンク界の重鎮。
音楽的特徴は、ボーカルの知的な視点と、ギターが生み出す泣きのメロディ、そして多声コーラス「オー・オー・コーラス」がトレードマーク。
彼らの音楽性は初期の荒削りなハードコアから、1988年の『Suffer』でメロディック・パンクの原型を確立、1990年代にはメジャーで成功しつつも、常に「パンクとは何か」を問い直してきた。
特に、結成メンバーのグラフィン（Vo）とギュアウィッツ（Gt/Epitaph社長）のコンビは、思想とビジネスの両面でパンクシーンの最重要人物。
シーンでの評価は揺るぎなく、The OffspringやGreen Dayら後のパンクバンドに決定的な影響を与えたカリフォルニア・パンクの始祖にして生きる伝説である。
