1970年代後半NWOBHMの旗手としてデビューし、攻撃的なツインギターの調和、スティーヴ・ハリスの特徴的なベースギャロッピング、ブルース・ディッキンソンのオペラティックなハイトーンヴォーカルが特徴的。
初期はパンク的な疾走感とメタルの融合を示し、1980年代中頃はシンセやキーボードを導入し、プログレッシブかつ壮大なコンセプトアルバムへ進化。黄金期の『The Number of the Beast』『Seventh Son of a Seventh Son』ではドラマチックで重厚な楽曲が確立され多くの後進に影響を与えた。
1990年代は暗くヘヴィな路線にシフト、2000年代以降は技巧性と壮大さを融合し、メタル芸術の基準を押し上げ続けている。シーンにおける影響力は絶大で今なお革新を続けるメタル界の王者である。
