1980年代のオルタナティブ・ロック・シーンを牽引し、後のバンドに大きな影響を与えました。
初期は独特なギターリフとマイケル・スタイプの不明瞭な歌唱スタイルが特徴。アルバム『Automatic for the People』(1992)ではアコースティックなサウンドに移行し、商業的な成功を収めた。その後も音楽性を変化させつつ活動を続けたが2011年に円満解散。彼らは、メインストリームとアート志向を両立させた、ロック界における重要な存在として位置づけられている。
