ポストパンクの系譜から出発し、叙情的で壮大なロックサウンドを確立したアイルランドの世界的バンド。
初期は内省的かつスピリチュアルなテーマを追求し、3rdアルバム「War」で政治的メッセージ性を強め世界に台頭。80年代後半には「The Joshua Tree」でスタジアムロックの頂点に立ち、アリーナを掌握する圧倒的なライブパフォーマンスでカリスマ的地位を確立。
90年代には「Achtung Baby」でエレクトロニクスやオルタナティブロックを取り入れ大胆な音楽性の変化を遂げ、常に革新を追求する姿勢を見せた。ボノの魂のこもったボーカル、ジ・エッジの個性的なギターエフェクト、堅固なリズム隊が生み出す独特のサウンドは唯一無二。社会貢献活動にも熱心で単なるロックバンドを超え、世界に影響を与える存在として半世紀近くにわたり音楽シーンの最前線に立ち続けている。
